FLINT (WJRT) – (08/16/17) – Have you ever read “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” or “The Stinky Cheese Man” fairy tales?
It may surprise you to learn the successful and silly children’s book author was born and raised in Flint.
Jon Scieszka’s newest book is written specifically for Genesee County families to inspire them to make reading a big part of their everyday lives.
He unveiled “Welcome to the World, Baby!” Wednesday afternoon at the Hurley Children’s Center inside the Flint Farmers’ Market.
The book is an instruction manual of sorts for infants to explain the world around them.
One line reads, “See those giant faces staring at you? They are your people.”
Reading is especially important after the water crisis. Kids exposed to lead need to keep their mind sharp and books are the best and most meaningful way to do that.
“It’s kind of a great way to connect with your child, I mean that’s what books really are all about. It’s about keeping your kid with you, reading to them, being with them. It’s a fun and smart thing to do,” Scieszka said.
Thanks to a partnership with United Way of Genesee County, every new parent in Flint and Genesee County will be given a copy to encourage that bond.
